Biomass boiler more than halves fuel bills at Green Barn
Client | Green Barn, Derbyshire |
We installed... | Eco Angus 40kw biomass boiler with 2 x 1000 litre AKVATERM tanks and a Honeywell programmable room controller |
Annual fuel saving | £1,840 (oil vs. logs) |
Annual RHI income | £7,930 - combined with the fuel savings, that's £55,510 over 7 years from an installation that cost £30,000. |
Green Farm is barn conversion, recently beautifully restored and updated by its owners Pete and Lynn. The barn had an existing central heating system powered by an oil fired boiler.
Lime-Circle designed and installed a 40 Kw Eco-Angus Biomass log boiler system which was coupled to two 1,000 litres buffer tanks. The buffer tanks make provision for mains pressure (33 litres per minute) hot water demand. These tanks also allow an efficient burn protocol under low load conditions.
The fuel store and boiler room make use of an old existing barn adjacent to the main house which was undergoing restoration. The whole project was carried out by Lime-Circle using their own plumbers and registered Part P electricians, and because we are accredited by the MCS, the project qualified for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
Year round performance
During winter months, the boiler is filled with clean hard wood logs twice a day, heating a six bedroomed barn and suppling plenty of hot water for the four bathrooms and kitchen. In the summer, one or two burns a week fill the tanks with enough heat to meet the barn’s hot water needs. The two highly insulated Akvaterm 1000 litres tanks only have a 2 degree loss ratio per day. The heating for the house is controlled by a simple thermostatic programmable controller which, when required, will put the system into slumber mode to save more fuel.
